First degree related to Communications Engineering from an internationally recognised university.

From our long standing experience, for successful studies the applicants should have a performance well above average (upper third), with a GPA of at least 75% (or 3.5 on a scale of 4.0; 4.0 on a scale of 5.0; "First Class with Distinction").

Excellent performance in the field of Communications Engineering, especially in Probability and Random Processes, Information Theory, and Signals and Systems is mandatory.

Substantial knowledge in Mathematics, Digital Signal Processing, fundamental knowledge in Computer Programming. 

International applicants

Entrance Requirements for students who are NOT citizens of the European Union and who do NOT have a first degree from a Bologna System University.

A candidate should have a recognized first degree (Bachelor of Science or Engineering) in Electrical Engineering awarded by an internationally recognized university-level institution. Candidates should have also performed above average in their undergraduate studies.

The following documents are required for an evaluation of the application:

  • Results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). There is no minimum required score, although the result is considered by the selection committee.
    If it is very hard to obtain a GRE at all in your country (e.g. Iran), please contact the coordinator before the submission of the application.
  • IELTS or TOEFL certificate with the following minimum scores: IELTS: 6.0, TOEFL internet based: 80, TOEFL paper-based: 550, TOEFL computer-based: 213. The scores must also be sent through the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to RWTH International Office, 52056 Aachen, Germany; the code for RWTH Aachen University is 8504. You may be asked for a department code. Please leave the field blank.
  • Authenticated copies of all first degree academic certificates, transcripts, or other academic records of your undergraduate studies including credits and grades achieved in each subject.
  • An authenticated translation of your degree certificate into German, English, or French, if the original documents are not in one of these languages. This document may be handed in later during enrollment.
  • Candidates who have completed their previous education in China must also include the APS Certificate of Authenticity (Echtheitsbestätigung) issued by the Academic Acknowledgement Bureau in Beijing (Akademische Prüfstelle in Peking)!
  • Two recommendation letters.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Letter of Motivation.

European applicants

Entrance Requirements for citizens of the European Union.

For a successful application, the following requirements of ECTS credit points are required:

  • Higher Mathematics, minimum extent 28 ECTS
  • Physics and physical fundamentals in Electrical Engineering (e.g., material science), minimum extent 12 ECTS
  • Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering, minimum extent 30 ECTS
  • Fundamentals of Computer Science and Programming, minimum extent 12 ECTS
  • Fundamentals of Mathematical System Theory, minimum extent 8 ECTS
  • Theoretical specialization in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, min. extent 8 ECTS
  • Application-oriented courses, e.g., from the areas Circuit Technology, Microelectronics, Communications Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Computer Engineering or Medical Engineering, minimum extent 20 ECTS

For candidates who do not meet the above ECTS requirements, a special admission process is issued which considers the focus of the studies, the grades and other academic achievements. In these cases additional requirements which have to be met until the end of the master can be imposed.
The submission of a Curriculum vitae and a Letter of Motivation is highly recommended.
